Since 1999, the Ruth B. Shannon Center for the Performing Arts at Whittier College has been providing educational community outreach performances for Whittier area elementary school students.

These Outreach programs enable young local students to gain an appreciation of music and theatre that is not available in their schools. All performances, especially designed for children, are an introduction to the arts that includes a theatre-going experience. These Outreach programs are offered to the schools at no charge. Since its inception, over 25,000 elementary school children have had the opportunity to attend over 100 events at our facility. This program is designed to enhance the arts education practices of the Whittier area elementary school districts, and to assist them in fulfilling the California State Visual and Performing Arts Guidelines – specifically those guidelines for Historic and Cultural Context and for Aesthetic Valuing.

The Shannon Center outreach program is made possible by generous funding from the BCM Foundation.
